If you are planning to move to a farm, then the chances that you will encounter a septic tank system are quite high. With most farms lacking connection to a sewerage system, septic tanks are the ideal system for proper waste management. While most tanks are designed to contain the foul smell that is a by-product of bacterial activity, it is essential to remember that generated gas must be released to prevent pressure build-up. For this reason, it is difficult to entirely avoid foul smells being discharged from a septic tank. That being said, you can take some measures to prevent those early morning smelly whiffs. This article highlights some of the solutions
Extend Height of Head Vent -- The primary function of a head vent on a septic tank is to prevent pressure build-up as a result of accumulated gas. Since a septic tank is located far away from the main house in most farms, the vent's vertical height is kept low. It becomes a problem when it gets windy because gas is released near ground level and does not get sufficient time to rise higher than a house's roofline. In this case, consider increasing the head vent's vertical height by a couple of metres to make sure that its opening is above the roof. When gas is released at such heights, then the chances of people wincing from the foul smell are considerably limited.
Reduce Vent Diameter -- Apart from the vertical height of a vent, its diameter plays a significant role in determining the amount of gas released to the atmosphere. If a vent's diameter is relatively wide, then the amount of odour released will be equally high and vice versa. Therefore, take a good look at the width of the septic tank vent to determine whether it is worth reducing. For instance, if a 70mm diameter vent releases a lot of gas and consequently lots of bad smell, then consider reducing the diameter to 50mm and so on.
Increase pH -- The bacteria inside a septic tank can only actively break down waste under optimal conditions. Therefore, when the pH of the tank's contents is low, the bacteria produce a characteristic sour smell. If you experience such source odour, you need to increase the system's pH by flushing 500g of hydrated lime into the tank about 2 to 3 times a day until the sour smell disappears.
